New England Fall Foliage
“I’ve been having so much fun! This doesn’t feel like a tour; it’s just a group of girlfriends traveling together and having a good time.” I heard this comment during our farewell dinner conversation around the table in Ogunquit, Maine. We started the tour in New Hampshire just six days earlier, and now we were gathered around the table, reminiscing about the wonderful moments we had shared while traveling through the spectacular fall colors of New England. Strangers just a week ago, these ladies had become friends throughout our travels. The trip wasn’t just about the fall foliage. It truly was an experience among friends that will be remembered for years to come.
It’s hard to come up with favorite memories. The experiences all blend together seamlessly in a mosaic of colors, sights, smells, tastes and emotions that made this trip so special. We loved the small towns of Vermont, with the church steeples nestled into bright oranges and reds. The cobblestone streets were lined with bakeries, cafes, and restaurants that shared their delightful aromas, enticing us to come in and taste. The hike through the Flume Gorge in New Hampshire got our hearts racing, as did the waiters at MC Perkins Cove in Maine! The Mount Washington Resort was divine. We tasted wine, shared stories on the veranda, and laughed as the shuttle driver entertained us with his tales. The drive along the infamous Kancamagus Scenic Byway gave us everything we had hoped for in terms of viewing the fall foliage of New England with beautiful shades of yellows, oranges and reds. The crashing waves on the coast of Maine were intoxicating to watch and to hear. The lobster was all we had hoped it would be and the desserts were heavenly.
Yes, the trip was full of variety, and the variety of colors was abundant. But what I found most intriguing was the variety of women. The different colors of autumn seemed to correspond with the travelers that were on this trip. We had green, women who hadn’t really traveled solo until now and were apprehensive about Women Traveling Together. We had yellow, women who were adventurous and excited about traveling to a new place and meeting new people. There were the bright orange women who kept us laughing throughout the entire trip with just an expression on their face, or a single word. These women could have fun anywhere, anytime and with anyone! The reds were quite remarkable. These ladies were bright, intelligent, and talented in many different ways. Some had been through difficult times in life, and their struggles rewarded them with deep, rich, beautiful hues that could cut right to the soul of those who were fortunate enough to spend time with them.
The New England autumn is beautiful with its breathtaking landscapes and colors. The mosaic of women who chose to travel to New England together, is even more magnificent.
